BIO
Born and raised in St. Louis, Abby Platte is a multi-disciplinary artist dedicated to creating accessible and inclusive art. Their practice spans printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, painting, digital and graphic art, pen and ink, photography, collage, drawing, fiber and textiles, as well as installation art. Influenced by their maternal grandfather's career as a comic artist and their paternal grandmother's pioneering artistry in her time, they have always been surrounded by creativity and innovation.
Platte's artistic path took a significant turn during their father's battle with cancer, which introduced them to the therapeutic power of ephemeral art. This period of Platte's life taught them the importance of creating art that is not just seen but experienced in a way that embraces its transient nature.
The biggest influence on Platte's current work is their daughter, whose autism diagnosis inspired them to delve into fiber arts, creating tactile and sensory-friendly installations. These pieces are designed to provide a visual reprieve and a safe, engaging environment for all, especially those who, like their daughter, find solace in tactile and immersive experiences.
Platte's art is characterized by its use of unique colors, textures, and ephemeral elements, reflecting their commitment to accessibility and a deep love for St. Louis. They aim to create spaces where art is not only seen but felt, fostering a sense of community and acceptance for all. Through their work, Platte strives to honor their family’s legacy, their identity, and their experiences, creating a bridge between art and life that invites everyone to connect and engage.
